SESSION 2. Let's Talk EquityDiversityInclusion in Science

November 28, 13 h. | Instituto de Ciencias Nucleares - UNAM | Auditorio Marcos Moshinsky

Workplace climate can promote, or hinder, scientific productivity and innovation. In this presentation, Dr. Richey will discuss Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in STEM, addressing the problem topics of unconscious bias, conscious bias, harassment, and how each is impacting our community. Dr. Richey will share the results of the Survey on Workplace Climate conducted by the American Astronomical Society Committee on the Status of Women in Astronomy, which sought to discover whether scientists in the astronomical and planetary science communities experienced a hostile work environment. The presentation will also highlight solutions to these problems, including techniques for dealing with unconscious bias, conscious biases, and harassment, such as discussions on awareness, and training programs to mitigate these issues. The conversation will additionally include a discussion on allyship, and leadership’s responsibility to create safe environments. This presentation is meant for anyone looking to improve their work climate and create a safe, welcoming community for all scientists to achieve success.
